EUSSER - European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation

EUSSER Physiotherapy Speciality Day – Lyon 2011

17th September 2011

The third EUSSER physiotherapy specialty day was held in collaboration with SFRE (Society of French therapists) as part of the SECEC meeting in Lyon.

The morning session of the conference was on the topic of management of rotator cuff pathology, in particular post-operative rehab. Different approaches were presented by different clinical experts around France, on rehabilitation after arthroscopic cuff repair, this lead to an interesting and animated discussion among the speakers and the audience. In particular the timing of rehabilitation, the amount of loading of the rotator cuff after suture, and the risk of frozen shoulder. It was summarized that pre-operative assessment and advice are important issues, in order to prepare the patient for post-op rehab, and to look for possible pre-operative shoulder stiffness; there is no consensus in the literature regarding the duration and the modalities of postoperative immobilization, and that pre-operative stiffness was a risk factor for post-operative outcome. Besides the discussion among the French physiotherapists, EUSSER-members were very active in the discussion, sharing their experience from other European countries with the audience. Thanks to all EUSSER members being present and for their participation to the forum.

The afternoon session was then a free scientific paper session chaired by Olivier Gagey (Chair of EUSSER scientific committee). A total of 14 papers were presented from around the world on aspects of rehabilitation. It was nice to see over 100 people in the auditorium with a mixture of therapists and surgeons. Such an opportunity for therapists to present research is great and it is hoped this will now become a key part of future EUSSER specialty days.

On a social note the weather in Lyon was fantastic and made the city even more radiant in the sunshine so an opportunity for delegates to combine work with pleasure. EUSSER Board members attended the SECEC gala dinner which allowed time to further strengthen our links with SECEC and the French provided exquisite food and wine, the delicate pastries were a highlight!

The next EUSSER specialty day will be held in Dubrovnik, Croatia Sept 2012, we hope to see the society grow and grow and see even more members attend.
