EUSSER - European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Rehabilitation

ICSET - 3rd International Congress of Shoulder & Elbow Therapists - Edinburgh 2010

5th-8th September 2010
ICSET 2010
Dr Jeremy Lewis, ICSET Keynote speaker.

The EUSSER board and members had an opportunity to meet at the 3rd International congress of shoulder and elbow therapists in association with the surgical society this year in Edinburgh. It was a hugely successful scientific meeting with an opportunity to hear international speakers as well as networking and developing links with our colleagues across the Atlantic and Pacific.

EUSSER were invited to open the session with a Rotator Cuff Symposium which included speakers, Olivier Gagey (France), Prof Andy Carr (UK), Dr Jeremy Lewis (UK), Phillipe Favre (Switzerland), Valentina Spunton (Italy) and Tania Douglas (UK). Lectures included the current theories in Rotator Cuff disease and management.

Dr Jeremy Lewis was also invited to give the ICSET keynote lecture “Subacromial Impingement Syndrome: A Musculoskeletal Condition or a Clinical Illusion?” Jeremy argued that subacromial impingement syndrome is unlikely to be caused by the acromion and should be called subacromial pain syndrome. His lecture focussed on the shift away from mechanical, extrinsic models of rotator cuff irritation towards an intrinsic tendinopathy model. He illustrated the lack of robust evidence for subacromial decompression surgery and the cost effectiveness of conservative treatment in comparison.
